A History of Charlton Library & Its Impact
The Woolwich Library has a fascinating history, initially being established in 1938 as a branch of the larger Woolwich Borough Library. Originally situated within a modest space on Charlton Church Street, it served a rapidly growing community and became a vital resource for local residents, particularly during and after World War here II. The library faced setbacks including wartime closures and funding cuts but consistently resumed operation its purpose. In the 1980s, it transitioned to its current location on Pond Road, offering a larger building with improved facilities. This shift marked a significant upgrade and allowed for an expanded collection and increased community programs.
